The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 24) will take place on the 2 – 14 December in Katowice, under the Presidency of Poland. The Conference will bring together representatives from national governments and numerous non-Party stakeholders from various fields.
It will include the twenty-fourth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 24), the fourteenth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14), the seventh part of the first session of the Ad-hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-7) and the third part of the first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1-3). In addition, the forty-ninth sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 49) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 49) will take place during the conference.
The most important task of COP 24 will be to finalise and adopt the rules for implementing the Paris Agreement under the Paris Agreement Work Programme (PAWP), so as to ensure it can take into effect in 2020. Apart from the negotiations around the PAWP, the conference will see a number of high-level events, mandated events, global climate action events and roundtables, the Talanoa Dialogue and numerous side events. The High-level events include the High-level Global Climate Action Event, the High-level part of the stocktake on pre-2020 implementation and ambition, the 3rd Biennial Ministerial High-Level Dialogue on Climate Finance – Translating climate finance needs into action, and the political phase of the Talanoa Dialogue
In addition, the conference will see the launch of the RegionsAdapt 2018 Report: Multi-level governance in climate change adaptation. The report contains data from 38 regional governments, who are members of the RegionsAdapt initiative and who disclosed their data on climate risks and adaptation efforts to CDP’s states and regions platform. It is the third annual report of the initiative using the data provided by members of the initiative as one of the commitments they agree upon by joining the initiative.
